The POP-EXPOSE ‘The Runaways’ by Mitchell Smith!

In the 1975 Sandy West and Joan Jett got together to form the all girl music group The Runaways. They were a pioneer for this type of band. They were young, hot, sexy, and weren’t afraid to show it off. They had a short 4 year stint before the group broke up, but many of the band members went on to have successful careers. Joan Jett would go on to having a very successful career and is touring with Boston right now. They will be hitting my area at the end of the month and she still sounds really great. Rock on Joan. Lita Ford went on to a solo career and was popularized in 1988 from her Kiss Me Deadly video.

Ford also paired up with Ozzy Osbourne for Close My Eyes Forever and these 2 songs remain her top 2 songs. Ford took a lot of time off and has been touring since 2008. Her and Joan had a falling out, but it would be awesome to see the 2 pair up again. Micki Steele ended up with the Bengals and that was just another great female band that was very successful. Although she has dabbled a bit in solo work and helped out here and there Steele’s career has been on the back burner since the Bengals broke up in the 90’s. Sandy West who pioneered with Jett gave a solo career a go with little success.

Her and Jett remained close friends and Sandy died in 2005 from cancer. Cherie Currie the lead singer went on to a quite successful career in music and movies. She has done some recent work and who knows if we may see a reunion. It would be cool to see them get back together for a tour, but they would have to rebuild some bridges and take time out of their lives to make it happen. Either way this group was a breakthrough group for all female bands and the nature in which they did it, help popularize other bands made up primarily of females.
